Mesh vs Fabric vs Leather Office Chairs: Which Upholstery Actually Lasts in Indian Offices

Most upholstery decisions get made off a showroom photo or a global brand's product page — both usually shot in a climate-controlled studio, which tells you almost nothing about how that material behaves in a non-air-conditioned office or a coastal city's humidity.

Mesh: the safest default for hot, humid climates

Breathability reduces sweat buildup on long sits and weathers non-AC or intermittently-cooled offices far better than dense foam-and-fabric combinations. The weak point over years is usually frame tension sagging slightly, not the mesh itself tearing.

Fabric: comfortable, but more climate-dependent

Fabric gives a softer cushioned feel than mesh but retains heat and moisture more. That matters most in coastal humidity — Chennai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam — where fabric is more prone to odour or mildew without consistent ventilation. In a reliably air-conditioned office, this is far less of a concern.

Leather and PU leather: status appeal, climate tradeoffs

Leather gives executive seating a premium look, but both genuine and PU leather can feel warm and tacky in humid, non-AC conditions, and PU is more prone to cracking under sustained heat exposure over years. It works best in consistently climate-controlled executive cabins rather than an open-plan floor.
