How to Choose the Right Ergonomic Office Chair for Long Work Hours

Most people who sit for eight to ten hours a day never actually test a chair before buying it — they pick a photo off a catalogue, or worse, whatever's already in the boardroom. Then three months in, someone's complaining about a stiff lower back, and the chair gets blamed for a decision that was really made on price alone. After three decades of building seating for offices across South India, we've found the good chairs and the bad ones fail in very predictable ways. Here's what actually separates them.
Start with the lumbar curve, not the cushioning
A thick, plush seat feels comfortable in a showroom for the thirty seconds you sit in it. It rarely stays comfortable at hour six. What matters far more is whether the backrest has a built-in lumbar curve that sits in the small of your back and keeps your spine in a natural S-shape. If a chair needs an aftermarket lumbar cushion to feel supportive, that's a sign the backrest geometry wasn't engineered for long sitting in the first place — it was engineered to look good in a product photo.
Seat depth matters more than most buyers realise
If the front edge of the seat presses into the back of your knees, blood flow gets restricted and legs go numb — a very common complaint we hear about hand-me-down chairs bought for a different body type. A properly sized seat leaves two to three finger-widths of clearance between the seat edge and your knee when your back is against the backrest. This is exactly why we build our operational and executive ranges with slightly different seat depths rather than one universal shell — a receptionist and a site engineer are not the same size.
- Adjustable armrests — height and width, at minimum — so shoulders can relax instead of shrugging to reach a fixed armrest
- A tilt-lock mechanism, not just a fixed recline angle, so the chair can be locked upright for focused desk work and released for reading or calls
- A five-star base with a load rating that matches the actual job — a task chair rated for 90kg has no business in a 24-hour control room
- Breathable mesh or a high-density foam that doesn't compress permanently within the first year of daily use
Why BIFMA testing is worth asking about

A chair that hasn't been tested this way can look identical to one that has — the difference only shows up eighteen months later, when the gas lift starts sinking overnight or a weld gives way under someone leaning back.
